Where 瓜 comes from

瓜 draws a gourd dangling between two curling vine strokes — the vine cradles the fruit. Every cucurbit in Chinese hangs off this one character: 西瓜 watermelon (west melon), 冬瓜 winter melon, 黄瓜 cucumber (yellow melon), 南瓜 pumpkin (south melon).

瓜 in Chinese culture

Summer in China is 西瓜 season — half a chilled watermelon and a spoon is the national air-conditioning. Internet-age 吃瓜 'eating melon' means watching drama unfold from the sidelines: the 吃瓜群众 are the popcorn gallery of Chinese social media.

Example

西瓜 xīguā — watermelon

夏天我最爱吃西瓜。
Xiàtiān wǒ zuì ài chī xīguā.
Watermelon is my summer favorite.

How to remember it

A gourd swinging between two vines — MELON on the vine.

China grows and eats about 60% of the world's watermelons — 吃瓜 is not just a metaphor, it's agricultural fact.
