文 began as a picture of a person with a pattern or tattoo on the chest — crossed decorative lines. From 'markings' it grew to mean writing, script, literature, and culture itself. Every written word is a kind of pattern, and 文 is the character for the whole idea.
Pair it with 中 and you get 中文 — the Chinese language, the very thing you're learning right now. 文化 means 'culture', 文字 means 'written characters', 课文 is a 'text/lesson'. To the Chinese, civilization itself is 文明 — 'bright with writing'.
Crossed decorative lines on a chest — a PATTERN, and so writing and culture.
中文 (Chinese) and 学 (to learn) and 我 (I) — you can now write 我学中文, 'I study Chinese.' That's a true sentence describing exactly what you're doing.
