视 (traditional 視) joins 礻, the altar/spirit radical, with a seeing element. Its oldest sense was watching the omens at a ritual — attentive, purposeful looking, not just letting light in.
视 is formal 'seeing with intent': 电视 (electric seeing — television) brings it home daily. 重视 (zhòngshì) means to take seriously — literally 'view as heavy'. 视力 is eyesight. Where 看 is casual looking (you learned it), 视 is the studied gaze — which is why doctors, engineers and news anchors live in 视 words.
Spirit altar 礻 + seeing — watching the omens: to VIEW attentively.
重视 'view as heavy' = to value/take seriously — weight as a metaphor for importance, same as English 'carries weight'.
