旅 shows people gathered beneath a fluttering banner — originally a military unit of five hundred soldiers on the march. Armies travel; eventually everyone did, and 旅 mellowed from campaign to vacation.
旅 is the travel bug: 旅游 (tourism — the verb of golden weeks), 旅行 (to travel), 旅馆 (inn). China's travel boom made 旅游 one of the era's defining words — high-speed trains full of 旅客 (travelers) every holiday. The classical 旅 kept its edge though: 商旅 were merchant caravans, and Li Bai called life itself 逆旅 — a wayside inn we all pass through.
